Short poems for children to learn assonance and consonant rhyme

What is rhyme? It consists of matching vowel, consonant or both sounds at the end of each verse in a poem. Why is rhyme used? Gives texts a special musicality when read aloud.

This is one of the learning that children do. They also have to learn what is assonance and consonant rhyme. On our site we have selected a series of short poems for children to learn assonance and consonant rhyme.

First it is important to learn what each rhyme consists of:

  • Assonance rhyme: the vowels of the last syllable of the verse rhyme. For example, "hard" and "cradle"
  • Rhyme: both the vowels and the consonants of the last syllable of the verse rhyme. For example, "path" and "destination".

So that children can distinguish them or you can work with your children or your students both rhymes, in these short poems, we have underlined the assonance rhyme and we have highlighted the consonant rhyme in bold.

At dawn

Trina a bird in the nest
beautiful song to the morning,
the flower grows on the rose bush,
croak in the pond frog.
A cricket sings too
happy at dawn,
and the snails come out
to walk later.

The elf of dreams

Hey, little pixie!
Where do you go every night?
You walk from here to there
I see you and then you hide.
And the goblin has answered me:
I am the elf of dreams,
and the children when they sleep
I watch every night
even though they can't see me

Accompanied
I see my head stick out
of a squirrel in the Mountain,
without moving from your place
your presence to me accompanies.
It seems to me that he spies on me,
I look at her and I don't say anything
we both look at the sea
hiding delighted.

Some lesson

In the sand on the beach
is doing his Castle,
it has been very nice
he thinks proudly kid.
When an old man has passed
see it with admiration,
because also of the children
you learn some lesson.

Happy they were

The dog barked
and the cat meowed,
while the mosquito,
hummed and buzzed
and the child in his crib
his mother sang.
Everyone in the house
happy They were.
